GES convenes emergency meeting with Central Region education leaders after violent incidents during inter-school sports. DG Prof. Ernest Kofi Davis condemns attacks and endorses suspension of competitions.
The Director-General of the , Prof. Ernest Kofi Davis, has convened a high-level crisis meeting following recent violent incidents recorded during ongoing inter-school sports competitions in parts of the Central Region.
The emergency meeting, held on Monday, 23 February 2026, brought together regional and district education directors, heads of affected schools, sports coordinators, parents, and students to assess the situation and determine the way forward.
The Central Regional delegation was led by the Regional Director of Education, Dr. Mrs. Juliette Dufie Otami. Also present were municipal and district directors of education from Agona West, Cape Coast Metro, Abura Asebu Kwamankesse, and Awutu Senya.
Heads of Aggrey Memorial Senior High School, Adisadel College, Swedru School of Business, Obrachire Senior High Technical School, and Kwanyako Senior High Technical School were in attendance, together with the Regional P.E. and Sports Coordinator, Regional PRO, Zonal Sports Executives, and Coordinators..
The Technical Advisor to the Minister for Education, Prof. George K.T. Oduro, also participated in the meeting.
Eyewitness Accounts and Immediate Measures
The Regional Director and her team provided detailed accounts of the incidents, outlining how tensions escalated during some of the competitions. They also presented the immediate steps taken to restore calm and proposed strengthened security arrangements for future sporting events.
The Director-General strongly condemned the acts of violence and described the level of aggression displayed by some students as unacceptable. He stressed that school sports are intended to promote discipline, teamwork, and mutual respect, not hostility and confrontation.
Endorsement of Suspension
Prof. Davis endorsed the decision by the Central Regional Directorate to suspend all inter-school sporting activities pending thorough investigations.
He reaffirmed that sports remain a vital platform for discovering and nurturing talent. He noted that football and other sporting disciplines have become viable career pathways and urged students to channel their energy into disciplined development rather than destructive conduct.
No Fatalities Recorded
GES Management clarified that contrary to rumours circulating on sections of social media, no death was recorded. The student who had been falsely reported dead was present at the meeting. Other affected students who were hospitalised have since been discharged and are receiving appropriate care.
Management further confirmed that individuals alleged to have participated in the assaults have been arrested and are assisting the police with investigations.
Sanctions to Follow Due Process
In his concluding remarks, the Director-General stated firmly that any student found culpable would face sanctions in line with the laws of Ghana and the regulations governing the Ghana Education Service.
He assured parents and the public that GES remains committed to restoring discipline and ensuring that schools remain safe spaces for learning and healthy competition.
